Open to all levels and all plein air media, rain or shine.
Working plein air, or on-site, from the landscape is an immersion into the environment with all of our senses. In this two-day workshop I will emphasize your connection with your subject so that your process is enjoyable and the final product is a genuine response to the scene.
We’ll be drawing and painting at sites in and around Auburn, NY. At each location you will choose your own subject from the landscape, architecture, and people present. We will explore conceptual ideas in our compositions. I will explain methods for creating spatial illusion. I will discuss the importance of value and how it can be translated into color and the interaction of colors. We’ll look at the ways in which lines and shapes can establish gesture and texture. I will work one-on-one with each person establishing a supportive working environment while demonstrating and offering design and technical information. At the end of each day we will come together as a group to assess the work done and share ideas about concept and craft.
I will be using charcoal for black and white studies and soft pastel for painting. Because I am emphasizing the plein air process and not a particular medium, you may choose to work with whichever media you like. I will supply a materials list.
